John A. Molinari, PhD

Dr. Molinari is Professor Emeritus at the University of Detroit Mercy School of
Dentistry, where he served for 32 years as Professor and Chairman of the Department of
Biomedical Sciences and Director of Infection Control. After leaving the University, he
was Director of Infection Control for THE DENTAL ADVISOR in Ann Arbor,
Michigan, where he was involved in research evaluating new infection control
technologies and products. He has published over 600 scientific articles, reports, text
chapters, and abstracts in the areas of microbiology and immunology, and continues to
lecture nationally and internationally on topics dealing with infectious diseases and
infection control. Dr. Molinari is also co-author of the text Cottone’s Practical Infection
Control in Dentistry. He served as a consultant for the CDC, ADA Council on Scientific
Affairs, Council on Dental Practice, and regional hospitals. Dr. Molinari also was
Chairman of the State of Michigan Governor’s Risk Reduction and AIDS Policy
Commission and a member of the Michigan Board of Dentistry. In addition, he was the
Infection Control section editor for The Compendium of Continuing Education in
Dentistry, a member of the Editorial Board for The Journal of the American Dental
Association, and contributed a monthly column for Dental Economics.
Application of evidence-based infection prevention practices and strategies provide effective
protection during provision of healthcare. The COVID-19 pandemic presented the latest challenge
to infection control in both medical and dental facilities. This seminar will focus on a practical
discussion of the most recent dental infection control recommendations Discussion sections include
hand hygiene, sharps safety, vaccinations, personal protective equipment (PPE), instrument and
handpiece reprocessing, environmental surface disinfection, and dental water treatment.
Application of Standard and Transmission-based Precautions, PPE, and air quality requirements to
minimize cross-infection from infectious airborne microorganisms also will be considered in light of
updated CDC, OSHA, NIOSH, and EPA publications.
Dr. Maha Ahmad, PhD

Dr Maha Ahmad teaches anatomy courses to dental, dental hygiene graduate students. Additional responsibilities include advising and mentoring students. She has received several teaching awards. Ahmad has many research interests including educational research, head and neck anatomy and salivary research. She received her Ph.D. in 2005 in Anatomy and Cell Biology from University of Illinois at Chicago. She joined the university in 2012.

Scott Tomar, DMD, MPH, DrPH

Dr. Scott Tomar is Professor and Associate Dean for Prevention and Public Health
Sciences at the University of Illinois Chicago College of Dentistry. He also holds an
affiliate faculty appointment in the Division of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, UIC
School of Public Health. Dr. Tomar currently serves on the American Dental
Association (ADA) National Fluoridation Advisory Committee and is the ADA
spokesperson on community water fluoridation. He has published about 180 journal
articles and book chapters and contributed to seven reports of the US Surgeon General.
Dr. Tomar is a Diplomate of the American Board of Dental Public Health.

Iwonka Eagle, RDH, MS
In 2000, Iwonka Eagle graduated from Michigan State University with a Bachelor of Science
degree in human biology and began working in research at the Karmanos Cancer Center. Her
interest in oral health was ignited shortly thereafter while working part time as a dental assistant
and led Iwonka to pursue a career in dental hygiene. Iwonka completed her dental hygiene
studies in 2004 at the University of Michigan, earning a Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene.
She began working in clinical private practice, then returned to UM and in 2014 graduated with
a Master of Science in Dental Hygiene degree. Over the course of her career, Iwonka Eagle has
taught across the division of dental hygiene in the undergraduate, degree completion and
master of dental hygiene programs. She also serves as the fundamentals of periodontics course
director for 1 st year dental students. In addition to being an educator as a clinical associate
professor, Iwonka Eagle has successfully mentored many undergraduate and graduate students
serving as both faculty advisor and thesis chair in their original research endeavors. In 2024,
Iwonka was appointed program director of the University of Michigan Dental Hygiene MSDH
program. Iwonka is also involved in both educational and clinical research herself. She is deeply
interested in advocating for interdisciplinary collaboration, as well as the advancement of the
dental hygiene profession. Iwonka Eagle is an active member of the American Dental Education
Association serving in various leadership roles, as well as a member of the American Dental
Hygienists' Association.
